The 100 Euro gold coin for 2016 is dedicated to Saint Luke the Evangelist. Artist Patrizio Daniele produced the design, which depicts Saint Luke in the act of painting the icon of the Blessed Virgin Mary, “Salus Populi Romani”, found in the Basilica of Saint Mary Major in Rome and attributed to St. Luke according to an ancient Christian tradition. A winged ox, symbol of the Evangelist, can be seen on the cover of one of the three books at his feet.
